Police Department THE NEW YORK CITY  will begin using drones in investigation and rescue missions and convict situations.

The department, the largest police force in the United States with 36,000 officers, announced Tuesday it has established an unmanned aircraft system program. The program will “be comprised of newly acquired Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or drones.”

The department said in a press release that the drones will be operated by officers in the its Technical Assistance Response Unit.

“This cutting-edge technology joins a long list of tools at the NYPD’s disposal during emergency situations,” NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said at a demonstration Tuesday. “The use of drones will also enhance officer safety.”

In addition to hostage and search and rescue operations, the drones can be used on calls for hazardous material spills, vehicle accidents and at inaccessible crime scenes. The utilization of drones will give the NYPD “an opportunity to see what they are getting into before they go into harm’s way,” Monahan said.

“Honestly, because of this alone, it would be negligent for us not to utilize this technology,” Monahan continued.

The police chief acknowledged that the public may have concerns regarding the scope of use of the drones, and he assured that the department’s drones will not be used for warrantless surveillance.

“Let me be clear: NYPD drones will not be used for warrantless surveillances,” Monahan stated. “NYPD drones will be used to save lives and enhance our response in emergency situations.”

The technology will be able to give police visuals of unknown situations “without putting officers at risk,” as well as “lessen harm and danger to civilian bystanders,” the release stated. The drones will “undoubtedly help keep New Yorkers and officers safe.”

Of the 14 drones that will be used, 11 are DJI Mavic Pro quadcopters, a smaller device that can be deployed quickly for tactical operations. Two DJI M210 RTK quadcopters will be used for search and rescue missions. These are larger, weather-resistant drones with a high-zoom camera, thermal imaging capabilities and 3D mapping. The NYPD will also have one DJI Inspire 1 quadcopter, which will be used for training and testing purposes.

“As a leader in the law enforcement community,” Monahan said, “we take pride in never becoming complacent, and we continually strive to improve.”
